It has a strong aroma and a sweet and spicy flavor. Star anise is grown in a warm and humid climate. The tree can be 80 years old, but it takes 10 years for the first harvest. Be careful not to confuse the star anise fruit with the poisonous, sharp-edged Japanese anise fruit - shikimi. anise fruit
Effect Star anise fruit contains significant amounts of essential oil (5-10%) rich in anethole (up to 90%). The anethole found in dried fruit is in the form of the E-isomer of anethole, less toxic than the Z-isomer of anethole. Anethole is the main determining factor in the antispasmodic and carminative (preventing gas formation in the intestines) properties of star anise.
Indications The anethole contained in anise has an expectorant, carminative and relaxing effect. Due to these properties, anise is used as an expectorant in diseases of the upper respiratory tract - cough, shortness of breath, pharyngitis, laryngitis and bronchitis. Besides, it is an anti-constipation remedy, it soothes stomach aches and flatulence. It is also a diuretic used in nursing mothers.
How to apply? Homemade anise medications can be made as an infusion or added to food. The infusion is made by pouring a glass of boiling water over a tablespoon of dried seeds. After brewing for 15 minutes, covered, the infusion should be drained. Serve before eating, three times a day for half a glass.
