Description

Activated carbon has a microparticle structure, thanks to which it has high absorbing (absorptive) abilities. They mainly concern substances such as: toxic chemicals, bacterial toxins, drugs and gaseous substances in the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract. The main toxic substances are mentioned in the scientific literature: tricyclic antidepressants, paracetamol and salicylates (the latter especially in the case of high dose ingestion in children). Activated charcoal is considered to be safe when compared with actions such as gastric lavage and induction of vomiting.

Coal, on the other hand, is less effective in poisoning: with petroleum derivatives, alkalis and acids, alcohol, iron, lithium, cyanides, essential oils or bleach, boric acid, metal compounds, DDT, methanol, ethylene glycol, as well as acids and inorganic bases. The most common use of charcoal: Charcoal preparations are helpful in acute diarrhea in adults. They are used orally in the form of tablets or capsules. They then act locally in the gastrointestinal tract.

It is not recommended to consume large amounts of carbon for a long time, because its absorption properties may cause a decrease in vitamins in the body. It also absorbs numerous enzymes, which can affect the digestive process. Activated charcoal is also used as an aid in flatulence, in poisoning with drugs and chemicals - in the latter case only in consultation with a doctor.

Contraindications: Activated charcoal should not be used in patients: unconscious, if intubation is impossible, with intestinal peristalsis paralysis, with gastrointestinal obstruction, with persistent vomiting, after operations, in electrolyte imbalance, during dehydration, just before the tests endoscopic, in case of allergy to the ingredients of the preparation. Activated charcoal should also not be used to treat acute diarrhea in children. So far, no in-depth studies have unequivocally evaluated the use of activated charcoal in the treatment of acute diarrhea in children.

Side effects after consuming coal: - stains stools black, - may mask gastrointestinal bleeding, - rare symptoms: headache, - vomiting, - nausea, - constipation, - may pass to the lungs.

Dosage: Usually 150mg of carbon a day supports the digestive tract. It is often combined with mint extracts or black berries as a means of supporting their action. Interactions: Activated charcoal may reduce the effectiveness of many oral medications: - antibiotics - contraceptives.
